In the first long-term study of its kind, at the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania, people who drank three 8-ounce glasses a day of the tangy crimson liquid raised their good cholesterol (HDL) by an average of 10 percent. That may not sound dramatic, but the re-searchers say a bump of that magnitude could actually lower heart attack risk by a whopping 40 percent.
And that’s not all. The subjects’ antioxidant levels, which are measured in the blood and are also associated with reduced heart disease risk, increased by as much as 121 percent.
